REIKI (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy
Reiki is the name given to a system of natural healing which is thousands of years old. It is believed that the technique was first used by Tibetan Buddhist monks and was rediscovered in the 1800s by Dr. Mikao Usui.
There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive a Reiki treatment, the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed.
A Reiki Treatment
The holistic approach of Reiki enables the body to use its own natural healing abilities. As a Reiki practitioner, I am a facilitator of your body's healing process. To do this, I treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms.
A Reiki treatment balances the flow of energy in the body. The practitioner places their hands non-intrusively in a sequence of positions, which cover the whole body. The experience of the treatment is usually a feeling of relaxation, protection, safety and comfort. Clients may or may not feel the energy being passed to them. Some clients have sensation of heat or cold, sometimes a tingling sensation. Whatever is felt is as it should be.
The treatment can be given seated or lying. The client remains fully clothed, as Reiki will pass through anything, even plaster casts. A full treatment usually takes about 1 hour.
It is hoped that at the end of the session, clients feel revitalised, balanced and relaxed. Clients take whatever healing they need in whatever way they need it. It is advisable to be still for a while after the session to prevent dizziness, and to drink some water.
Which conditions can Reiki help?
It is possible to heal at any level of being: physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. Acute injuries can be helped to heal very quickly; chronic illness can take longer.
Reiki is being used in GP surgeries, hospices, cancer support groups, post-operative surgery and the care of those suffering from MS and ME.
How many Reiki sessions will I need?
Even one Reiki session can make a difference, however it is usually more effective to have a course of regular treatments. The frequency will depend on the clients needs and may be weekly, fortnightly or monthly.
Learning Reiki
I have received the Third Degree level of Reiki attunement and in my practice I follow the guidelines of the Usui System of Natural Healing. This qualifies me to teach Reiki and I run courses for small groups.
There are three levels of Reiki; each one is complete in itself. Each level takes place over the course of a two-day workshop.
First degree Reiki empowers you to give this natural form of healing to yourself, your family and friends. It is also beneficial for practitioners of other complementary therapies to incorporate into their work.
Second Degree Reiki increases the healing level and enables you to become a practitioner (with appropriate insurance) of this healing art. Personal and spiritual development is also enhanced.
Third Degree Reiki is the advanced level and enables you to teach this healing system to others. This level is taught on a one to one basic.
